What cryogen does in an MRI

An MRI magnet is bathed in liquid helium at temperatures near absolute zero so it can stay superconducting. That helium is expensive, finite, and central to the machine's value.

Why handling it is a specialty

  • Liquid helium is extremely cold and displaces oxygen — safety procedures are mandatory.
  • A mishandled magnet can quench, venting the helium and potentially damaging the magnet.
  • Proper ramp-down and helium recovery protect the resale value of the system you're moving.

The cost of getting it wrong

An unplanned quench can mean a five-figure helium refill, downtime, and in the worst case magnet damage. That's why cryogen handling is never a place to cut corners.
